Dior

Christian Dior has been called “The most recognized name in fashion..." Born in Normandy France in 1905, this fashion and fragrance legend started off to study political science. By 1938 he had turned to dress design but because of his tour of duty in World War II, he was not able to develop his design business until 1946. His first collection released in 1947 featured a “New Look”; a richer look in contrast to the austerity of war styles which featured luxury rather than comfort. His creations helped re-establish formerly occupied France as the capital of world fashion.

Christian Dior virtually dictated fashion styles in the 1950’s. He pioneered license agreements in the fashion business. In 1953, he hired Yves Saint- Laurent as an assistant. Saint- Laurent became head designer after Dior’s untimely death in 1957. His successor, Marc Bohan, would remain with the company until 1989. Bohan is credited in many circles with the rescue of the Dior brand.

In 1984 Dior was acquired by a group of investors led by Bernard Arnault. Arnault took an active part in the direction Dior would take over the next few decades.

In 2001 the company decided to enter the men's fashion market, and their first show led by the talents of former Yves Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane was a huge triumph! Despite some ups and downs over the years, Dior is still considered as one of the most popular and innovative Fashion Houses in the world.
